Florence, the Renaissance gem

Staying in an Airbnb apartment a stone throw away from the Duomo was the perfect way to absorb the florentine way of life. Meeting our two gorgeous young men there, was obviously a massive bonus!

We have fallen under Florence’s charm: the meandering streets seem to compete with one another for the “most-charming”, “most spooky”, “most historical”, “most you name it” title. It takes no effort to imagine oneself rubbing shoulders with Renaissance people whilst walking through this maze of uneven surfaces. All the architectural details on just about every palazzo (famous or not) speak volume for the many generations of florentines who have kept this city so alive throughout the centuries.

The good tourists that we are tried to gain a better appreciation of the arts at the Uffizi gallery and Galleria dell’Accademia; whether any newly acquired knowledge sinks in remains to be seen! However, Michelangelo’s statues, not just David, have left an indelible impression not only thanks to their size but also the accuracy of the details. Taking time to visit many of the churches has definitely not done much for Anne’s religious conversion but discovering the starkness of the interior as opposed to the grandeur of the external architecture gave us another level of understanding of the spiritual life during the XV and XVI centuries. All we can say: we chose the right era to live in, no doubt!
